How Broken Hearts Are Made

How Broken Hearts Are Made started with the idea of piano keys that are rarely played. Many years ago we had an upright piano that I never learned to play. We had someone come in to tune it and he noticed that one of the lower keys was broken. He told me hardly anyone plays those keys so we were fine. That's always stuck in my mind and I finally used that idea in this song.

This was another song I wrote in February 2022. At this point, I had written several songs and I was starting to reuse lines from song ideas that didn't go anywhere. I first wrote, "The grove is a graveyard for every breeze that comes its way" on Feb 12, 2022. As a paged through my notebook, variations on that idea keep coming up.

A couple of days later I wrote:

The grove is a graveyard
For every breeze that comes its way
The choice is not our own.
Those keys hardly ever get played.

Which eventually became:

That grove is a graveyard
For every breeze that comes its way
It wasn't your choice to make
But you made it all the same
